The Alabama Sports Writers Association released its 2013 All-State football team Saturday, and the list of the state’s best athletes has plenty of local flavor.
Ten players from Etowah County earned first-team selections, while eight more were honorable mentions. Including schools from across The Gadsden Times’ coverage area, there were 17 first-team selections and 24 honorable mentions.
Southside and Glencoe led the way in Etowah County with three first-team selections each, with the Panthers getting three honorable mentions and the Yellow Jackets getting two.
For Southside, senior fullback Dantley Coker was a Class 5A first-teamer after rushing for 2,541 yards and 22 touchdowns during the Panthers’ historic run to the state semifinals. Coker was the very definition of a workhorse, carrying the ball 355 times for a 7.2 yard per carry average.
While the big numbers stand out, it’s the little things Coker was willing to do that were so impressive to coach Ron Daugherty.
“He was just a poster child for what we do,” Daugherty said. “He just went to work. A lot is said about the fact he rushed for 25-2,600 yards, but he was an unbelievable blocker. He carried out fakes, was a leader in the huddle and a leader at practice. He did all the little things. He’s going to get out there and do them and bring some of the younger kids along with him.”
Coker ran for a lot of yards behind junior left tackle Tyler Carr, who earned a spot on the first team for a second straight season.
“The kid’s going to do anything you’d ever ask him to do,” Daugherty said of Carr, who’s currently weighing offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Vanderbilt. “He’s got a great head on his shoulders and he’s going to make his decision based on whatever is best for him.”
Blake Devine landed a spot on the first team at the athlete position. The senior was a threat every time he touched the ball, rushing for 957 yards and 14 touchdowns, adding a pair of receiving scores and returning three kicks for touchdowns. He also had two interceptions.
In Daugherty’s pistol-wing, run-oriented offense, Devine didn’t get much of a chance to show off his receiving skills. But Daugherty said the wide receiver position suits Devine best should he play at the next level, and even compared him to one of the top receivers in the NFL.
“He’s probably a better receiver than he is a running back just because of his size, and he’s got great hands,” Daugherty said. “Blake Devine is a (Denver Broncos receiver) Wes Welker. He’ll get underneath, catch the 7-yard rout, take the lick, go back to the huddle and break one every now and then. He catches anything around him. If he was in the right system, he could play that position and do really, really well at it.”
Daugherty was honored as the 5A Coach of the Year after the Panthers set a school-record for wins and won their first region/area title since 1980.
Southside’s honorable mentions were kicker Carter West, linebacker Hunter Armstrong and defensive lineman Hunter Sparks.
Also in 5A, Etowah’s Coby Bryant earned a spot on the first team. The senior defensive lineman had 90 tackles — including 24 for a loss — with 11 sacks and 15 quarterback hurries.
“Coby made himself a very good player by working hard,” Etowah coach Drew Noles said. “He was a good player (last year), but I thought this year, he became an impact player. More than just doing his job, I thought he was able to control some games on the defensive line. He’s definitely as good of a team player as I’ve ever coached, too.”
For 3A Glencoe, coach Lee Ozmint is a proud coach and dad. His sons, defensive back Pace and running back Thomas, both were honored by the ASWA. Pace Ozmint was a first-team selection, while Thomas was an honorable mention.
“I’m proud of both of them,” Lee Ozmint said. “I think both of them, they realized at some point that they can be pretty good.”
Pace Ozmint joined Yellow Jacket teammates Dylan Stone and Mason Brown on the first team. Also getting an honorable mention was offensive lineman Tyler “Big Country” Johnson.
Pace Ozmint, a sophomore, was one of the top tackling safeties in the state this season, racking up 92 stops with four interceptions and six tackles for a loss.
“The thing I love about Pace, is that he loves the contact,” Lee Ozmint said. “Either a kid has that or he doesn’t. Pace has no conscience when it comes to hitting. As a sophomore, that’s very, very rare.”
Stone, the Yellow Jackets’ quarterback, was a first-team selection at the athlete position after proving how much of a threat he can be with both his legs and arm. The junior totaled 2,644 yards and accounted for 35 touchdowns in 2013.
It was a breakthrough year for Stone, who didn’t play much as a sophomore and spent his first year at quarterback. Coach Ozmint called him a “natural.”
“He hit a spurt about December of last year, and he just started filling in and got fast,” the coach said. “He got to where he could fly. We put him on the track team and he was the fastest guy we had. I put him at quarterback, and the rest is history. He’s a student of the game, he’s smart, he’s a natural. That’s one kid I can tell you, he’s a natural – a flat-out natural.”
Brown, a junior, averaged 13.5 tackles per game in 2013 and made 21 stops for a loss. He added six sacks.
“His number of tackles speaks for itself,” coach Ozmint said. “You question that and say, ‘Well, they’re just padding the stats.’ But if you come to a football game, you see he’s in on every tackle. Whether it’s a 15-yard gain or 15-yard loss, he’s in on the tackle.
“He has no regard for his body. He’s a great kid, works hard and has a nose for the football.”
Gadsden City had one first-team selection in 6A with defensive lineman Chris McElderry. The senior was solid in the middle for the Titans, making 67 tackles, five sacks and 10 stops for a loss.
In 4A, Sardis’ Blaine Pruitt was a first-team selection on the offensive line, while teammates Brett Rains (WR) and Keenan Lewis (Ath) were honorable mentions.
Pruitt graded in the 90s all season and earned a spot on the first team after receiving an honorable mention last season. Rains led The Times’ coverage area in receiving and was in the Top 5 in the state with 60 catches for 1,122 yards and 11 touchdowns. Lewis rushed for 1,001 yards and nine touchdowns to go along with two kick return scores and one defensive touchdown.
In 2A, Gaston’s Swane Morris was named Coach of the Year. Morris led the Bulldogs to the playoffs after taking over a team that went 0-10 in 2012.
Westbrook Christian’s Tyler Lowery earned an honorable mention as a punter in 2A.
In 1A, Coosa Christian’s Ben Mills was a first-team selection at defensive lineman. The junior was a force on offense, defense and special teams for the Conquerors this season, and his high motor served him well at defensive end. Mills made 179 tackles, 33 stops for a loss, seven sacks, seven forced fumbles and recorded a safety for first-year coach Scott Clifton.
By the end of the season, Mills was playing all 48 minutes of the game because of injuries to teammates, yet his production never went down.
“He was the most dominant player we had on both sides,” Clifton said of Mills, who also rushed for 1,264 yards and 14 touchdowns. “You look at his offensive and defensive stats, he ran the ball, was our leading receiver, leading rusher, leading tackler, so he was able to do a lot of things for us. It’s pretty impressive to watch him.”
Outside of Etowah County, Piedmont had three players named to the 3A first team — defensive back Darnell Jackson, linebacker Taylor Hayes and defensive lineman Exavyer Jackson.
Jackson, a sophomore, had 49 tackles with four interceptions and four stops for a loss. He added 12 pass break-ups and a fumble recovery and gave up just seven completions in 13 games.
Hayes, a freshman, had 131 tackles, nine stops for a loss and four sacks. He caused five fumbles and recovered two.
Jackson was a force on the interior for the Bulldogs, as the senior racked up 114 tackles — 24 for a loss — and registered nine sacks.
Getting honorable mentions for Piedmont were senior quarterback Ty Sparks, senior wide receiver Denard Spears and sophomore linebacker Neonta Alexander.
Fyffe had two first-team selections to go along with an honorable mention. The first-teamers were linebacker Trent Thrash and defensive lineman Cade Carroll, while defensive back Austin Stiefel got the honorable mention.
Thrash, who also was the team’s leading rusher, recorded 61 tackles with seven stops for a loss and five sacks in his senior season. He caused two fumbles, recovered two more, broke up three passes and blocked a punt.
Carroll, a senior, had 80 tackles and six stops for a loss to go along with two sacks and an interception. He batted down four passes and forced two fumbles.
In 1A, Cedar Bluff and Collinsville both had one first-team selection and one honorable mention.
For Cedar Bluff, Blake Terry was a first-teamer. The junior defensive back had 84 tackles, five stops for a loss and returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown. His teammate, junior offensive lineman Jake Mintz, was the Tigers’ honorable mention.
Shaq Dupree, a linebacker for Collinsville, was a first-team selection. Dupree made 140 tackles and six sacks in his season year. The honorable mention for the Panthers went to senior defensive lineman Kevin McElrath.
Also receiving honorable mentions were Albertville offensive lineman Tyler Jones in 6A, Fort Payne defensive lineman Derek Watkins in 5A, Crossville defensive back Josh Thacker and Cherokee County athlete Dallas Cabe in 4A, Geraldine offensive lineman Garrett Mitchell and athlete Devan Totherow in 3A, Sand Rock defensive back Chandler Mackey in 2A, and Gaylesville teammates Gage Davis (RB), Brandon Barnes (K) and Cole Murphy (P) in 1A.
