PIEDMONT — Last season’s Class 3A high school baseball runners-up, Piedmont, are still alive to return to Montgomery this year.
The Bulldogs (25-8) swept Glencoe 11-1 and 9-4 in nine innings in a Class 3A second-round playoff series Friday.
After winning the opener in six innings, Piedmont played a much closer game with the Yellow Jackets in the nightcap. A big top of the ninth, though, allowed the Bulldogs to emerge victorious.
With the game knotted at 4, Dillon Terry led off the ninth with a walk, and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Tyler Lusk followed with an RBI single off Dalton Roberts to put the Bulldogs up 5-4. Cade Bradley doubled to put two runners on, and Matt Strott reached on an error when Glencoe right fielder Ryan George overran the ball.
Two runs came home to make it 7-4. After a single by Cass McCord, Collin Bradley doubled to extend the lead to 9-4.
The Yellow Jackets (16-7) did not threaten to score in the bottom of the ninth.
Glencoe got three runs in the bottom of the first in Game 2.
Will Parker singled in a run, and got caught in a rundown that allowed Houston Word to score. A sacrifice fly by Dalton Reid made it 3-0.
Young countered with a two-run homer in the top of the second. Later in the inning, Cade Bradley hit an RBI single to tie the game at 3.
Joseph Fails put the Yellow Jackets back up with an RBI single in the third inning.
An RBI double by Taylor Hayes in the fourth brought the Bulldogs back into a tie.
Glencoe had a shot to win it in the seventh inning on a single by Parker, who had three hits in the game. However, McCord threw out Roberts at home on the play to force extra innings.
Dillon Terry went all nine innings to get the win, allowing seven hits. Piedmont had 16 hits off Roberts and starter Fails. Young led the way with three hits.
The first game had a bit less drama. The Yellow Jackets went up 1-0 in the first on an RBI double by Parker.
The Bulldogs got going in the bottom of the third. RBI singles by Collin Bradley and Strott made it 2-1. An error allowed another run to cross to make it 3-1.
A grand slam by McCord off Glecoe’s Dalton Reid in the fourth put the game out of reach at 7-1.
Piedmont added three runs in the sixth against reliever Jeff Ford. Collin Bradley’s sacrifice fly made it 9-1. A groundout by Caleb Adams pushed the lead to 10-1. Terry singled to left to make it 11-1 and end the game.
