Penton, No. 5 Spring Garden slip past No. 8 Cedar Bluff

SPRING GARDEN — Class 1A, No. 5 Spring Garden got a game-winning hit from Will Penton in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 4-3, Area 13 victory over No. 8 Cedar Bluff on Wednesday.

Penton’s double scored Grant Benefield in the one-run win for the Panthers (14-10, 7-1) and handed the Tigers (12-9, 5-1) their first area loss.

Penton also was the winning pitcher. He went all seven innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs.

Benefield had two hits and two runs scored for Spring Garden. Will Ivey had one hit and one run scored. Will Westbrook had one hit. Colton Lambert score a run. Curtis Abernathy took the loss for Cedar Bluff. The Panthers and Tigers play again Friday.
