Area teams take court with regional berths on line

Southside girls basketball coach Kim Nails talks with an official during a game earlier this month. Nails and Southside are going for the first sub-region win in the history of the program tonight at home against Columbia. It is believed a win also would give Nails her 500th career victory. Twenty-five area basketball teams play in this week’s sub-regional round of the high school basketball playoffs with a berth in the Northeast Regional tournament on the line.

All but one of the 13 area girls teams take the court Thursday night looking to keep their postseason dreams alive, while one area girls team and 12 area boys teams play Friday night.

Class 5A Southside is among the girls teams playing tonight, with the Panthers (20-6) hosting Columbia (16-18 at 7 p.m.

After Saturday’s 57-52 double-overtime win over Boaz, Panthers coach Kim Nails said it was believed to be first time in school history that Southside has won its area championship and hosted a sub-regional game in girls basketball.

Savannah Thomas and Sydney D’Eath are the lone seniors for the Panthers and lead the team alongside eighth-grader Haley Troup, who was named the MVP of the 5A, Area 10 tournament.

Aside from advancing to Jacksonville State University for the regional tournament, another motivating factor for Southside players includes being a part of more history. If the Panthers get the sub-region win, it’s believed Nails would record her 500th career victory.

Another team with hosting duties tonight is Class 6A Gadsden City. The 21-8 Titans, led by Dajia Williams, look to make the regional tournament for the fifth consecutive season. Standing in their way will be Lee Huntsville. The Generals are 18-9. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

Other girls sub-regional games, which will be played at 7 p.m. Thursday. unless otherwise noted, include Cedar Bluff at Appalachian and Parkway Christian at Spring Garden in 1A, defending state champion Section at Sand Rock and Gaston at North Sand Mountain in 2A, White Plains at Ashville, Glencoe at Piedmont and Geraldine at Holly Pond (in a game that will be played at 6 p.m. Friday) in 3A, Randolph at Douglas, Hokes Bluff at Anniston and Munford at Cherokee County in 4A and Boaz at Brewer in 5A.

In boys sub-regional play Friday, Hokes Bluff is coming off its first regular season area championship and an area tournament crown.

The Eagles are led by 7-foot-2 junior center Isaac Haas, who has had numerous college coaches at his games this season, and a strong supporting cast that includes senior point guard Brad Robertson.

Hokes Bluff (20-9) hosts Munford (12-14) at 7 p.m.

Westbrook Christian, ranked sixth in 2A, arguably has been the most consistent team, boys or girls, in Etowah County this season. Junior Colin Edwards has been a double-double machine this season, and his supporting cast, including Alex Perkins and Jonathan Ford, have played well alongisde the Warriors’ leading scorer.

The 25-4 Warriors welcome 19-9 Section to Rainbow City at 7 p.m. Friday. The Lions are traditionally a strong basketball team. Section’s last state title came in 1A in 2003.

Other boys sub-regional games, which start at 7 p.m. Friday unless otherwise noted, include Spring Garden at Shades Mountain Christian and Jefferson Christian at Collinsville in 1A, Gaston at North Sand Mountain in 2A, Piedmont at Ashville, Glencoe at Weaver and Geraldine at New Hope (at 7:30 p.m.) in 3A, Douglas at Madison County in 4A and Scottsboro at Fort Payne and Boaz at Columbia in 5A.
