Eagles fall short against Warriors in area tourney final


CENTRE — Cherokee County held on for a 30-29 win over Hokes Bluff in the final of the Class 4A, Area 10 girls high school basketball tournament Saturday night.

Hokes Bluff was unable to convert a chance to win as time ran down in the fourth quarter. A jump ball went to the Eagles with .07 seconds to play. The Eagles inbounded underneath their basket but couldn’t get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

The game was tied at 23 entering the final quarter. Hokes Bluff led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter and 17-14 at halftime. Game was tied at 23 at the end of the third.  

Hannah Evans, who had two 3-pointers, led the Eagles with 11 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Katie Ford followed with seven points. Carlie Shields and Elizabeth White also were named to the all-tournament squad. Shields had five points and White added three.

Darbie Rosser, the tournament MVP, led the Warriors with 10 points and three rebounds. She had two 3-pointers. Joining her on the all-tourney team were teammates Tori Davis, Jessen Burk and Chelsea Ray.

Davis had eight points, seven rebounds, three assists. Burk finished with seven points and three rebounds. Ray scored five points.
