GERALDINE — Glencoe managed a scoreless first half with Class 3A, No. 8 Geraldine, but turnovers doomed the Yellow Jackets in the second half in a 14-0 loss in the first round of the state high school football playoffs Friday night.
Glencoe managed to drive deep into Bulldog territory in the third quarter, but Geraldine’s Jacob Boman intercepted Daniel Otwell, who was at quarterback for the injured Hunter Nunnally, in the end zone.
Another Yellow Jacket drive ended with Boman again intercepting Otwell, this time returning it to the Glencoe 6. Michael Davis scored on a run on the next play to give Geraldine the third-quarter lead. Eduerdo Gutierrza’s extra point made it 7-0.
On the next drive, Boman intercepted his third pass in a stretch of four minutes, this one on his own 38. Geraldine (9-2) could not convert it into points, though.
In the fourth quarter, a pair of Yellow Jacket penalties helped move the ball to the Glencoe 30 for Geraldine. Several plays later, Devan Totherow ran it in from 13 yards out with 4:20 to go in the game to make it 14-0.
In the final three minutes of the game, Glencoe (5-6) had the ball deep in the Bulldogs’ side of the field, but each time Geraldine picked off a pass to preserve the win. The interceptions came in the end zone, at the Geraldine 10 and the Geraldine 2, respectively.
Neither team got things going in the opening half of play.
Glencoe ran 15 plays through two quarters and had only one first down. It came with 4:34 left before halftime and was the first time the Yellow Jackets crossed the 50-yard line. Still, the drive ended in another Otwell punt. Otwell punted three times in the opening half, pinning the Bulldogs inside the 20 each time with two punts at the 15 and one at the 5.
The Yellow Jackets held the Bulldogs on a couple of fourth-down plays in the first half after Geraldine gained the Glencoe 35 and 30.
Geraldine was penalized four times for 45 yards in the first half, while Glencoe was flagged once for holding and it was declined.
Otwell was 3 of 18 for 32 yards and six interceptions for the Yellow Jackets. For the game, Glencoe ran 41 plays and gained just 72 yards.
Davis rushed 17 times for 90 yards and a touchdown to go with an interception on defense for the Bulldogs. Jake Maddox was 3 of 9 passing for 51 yards. Geraldine totalled 235 yards.
The Bulldogs will face Lauderdale County next week in the second round of the state playoffs.
