ASWA, AHSAA honor area players

Several area high school football players were recognized Monday for their performances in Week 6 of the season.

Fort Payne’s Logan McPherson was a finalist for the Alabama Sports Writers Association Defensive/Special Teams Player of the Week. McPherson kicked a 57-yard field goal — tied for third-longest in state history — and made all three of his extra point attempts. He also averaged 35 yards per punt, including pinning two inside the 15-yard line, and put three of five kickoffs in the end zone in the No. 6 Wildcats’ 24-6 win over Boaz.

Three Etowah County athletes landed in the “other top performances” category, including Etowah’s Jay Duckett, Westbrook Christian’s Jonathan Ford and Sardis’ Toby Pee. Also being recognized were Cedar Bluff’s D’Shawn Fife, Boaz’s Peyton Gilliland, Gaylesville’s John David Jennings, Fort Payne’s Zach Magnusson, Spring Garden’s Tyler Morgan, Piedmont’s C.J. Savage and Fyffe’s Trent Thrash.

Also on Monday, the Alabama High School Athletic Association released its “Spotlight.”

McPherson, Thrash, Magnusson and Gilliland were recognized.
