High school football players across the state hit the field Monday for the first practices of the season.

Teams were allowed to practice in shorts and helmets but will not be allowed to put on full pads until Thursday as they prepare for 2012 season openers at the end of this month.

Coaches will have a bit of a different schedule for their respective teams this year, as the Alabama High School Athletic Association instituted a new rule in the offseason that restricts them from holding two-a-day practices on consecutive days. Also, teams may only hold one practice per day in full pads.

The rule is aimed to cut down on heat-related illnesses.
