Gadsden City wide receiver B.J. Hammond committed last week to play football for Mississippi State.

The 6-foot-4, 207-pound rising senior for the Titans gave his verbal pledge Thursday to head coach Dan Mullen and the Bulldogs. The verbal is non-binding until he signs an NCAA Letter of Intent on National Signing Day in February.

Hammond had a long list of schools vying for his commitment before he decided on the Bulldogs. He also had offers from Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Purdue, UAB, Arkansas State and Memphis, among others.

Hammond is rated a 3-star prospect by Scout.com and Rivals.com.

Rivals.com listed him as the No. 23 prospect in Alabama heading into the 2012 season.

Scout.com’s Andrew Bone rated Hammond as the No. 17 prospect in the state.

Hammond had 35 receptions for 600 yards and five touchdowns as a junior for the Titans.
