Cherokee County's Davis leads All-State softball team

Tori Davis’ campaign for the Cherokee County softball season can be summed up with one word: Dominating.
The junior pitcher was tough to hit when she was in circle and nearly impossible to get out when she was in the batter’s box, and today, the Alabama Sports Writers Association has named her the Class 4A Player of the Year.
Davis, who pitched behind All-State performer Lauren Millsaps last season, filled her predecessors shoes nicely in circle in 2012. She went 39-3 and led the Warriors to their second straight runner-up finish at the state tournament. She struck out 275 batters in 255 innings pitched and boasted a 0.60 ERA. At the plate, she batted .496 with 42 RBI and 38 runs scored, 17 doubles and five home runs.
A total of 27 area athletes made the All-State team, including 11 on the first team.
Joining Davis on the first team was battery mate Madison Millsaps. The sophomore catcher batted .551 with 34 RBI and 55 runs scored to go along with seven home runs. Warrior first baseman Molly Brewer and second baseman Darbie Rosser were selected as honorable mentions.
Two Etowah County players earned selections to the first team and one was an honorable mention.
In Class 3A, hard-hitting Glencoe catcher Jamie McGuire made the team after batting .537 with 63 RBI and 12 home runs in 2012. She struck out just twice and drew 23 walks. West End first baseman Courtney Oliver earned a spot on the Class 2A team. She batted .492 and recorded 35 RBI.
Sardis shortstop Kameron Carter was the only honorable mention from Etowah County.
In Class 5A, three Albertville players earned spots on the first team in pitcher Peighton Ponder, first baseman Katlin Light and shortstop Emily Woodruff.
Ponder helped lead the Aggies to the state tournament in Montgomery with a big season in circle. The sophomore went 31-10 playing against a tough schedule and posted a 1.79 ERA. She pitched 254 innings and struck out 218 while walking 67.
Light, a senior, batted .408 with 42 RBI and 34 runs scored. She homered seven times. Woodruff boasted a .485 average during her sophomore campaign. She scored 58 runs, had 42 RBI, six home runs and 47 stolen bases.
In Class 3A, Sylvania’s Taylor Frazier made the first team as an outfielder and Geraldine’s Ali Duke was the squad’s designated hitter.
Class 1A first-team honors went to Collinsville third baseman Trista Duque and Spring Garden outfielder Jordan Sides.
Honorable mentions in Class 5A went to Albertville catcher Brittany Copeland and Fort Payne shortstop Kesley Hughes and in 4A went to Crossville’s Haley Hughes. In Class 2A, honorable mentions were Sand Rock second baseman Megan McCullough and third baseman Madison Smith and Fyffe outfielder Hayley Mauldin and designated hitter Breanna LaRue. In Class 1A, Collinsville catcher Christy Cox, Spring Garden second baseman Jessica Smart and shortstop Heather Smart, Cedar Bluff outfielder Suzie Quarles and designated hitter Katie McGinnis and Gaylesville utility player Katlin Hammett each earned honorable mentions.
