A 7-3 win over Ragland on Tuesday put Gaston in the driver’s seat for the Class 1A, Area 11 high school baseball championship.
The Bulldogs scored five of their runs on Purple Devil errors to take the opening game in the best-of-three series being played this week to decide the area champion.
Allen Davidson went the distance on the mound. He struck out 11, while walking no one and scattering six hits through the seven innings. All three of Ragland’s runs were earned.
A home crowd watched Gaston (10-6) remain undefeated at 7-0 in area play with the win in the game that started at 1 p.m. on the Bulldogs’ campus.
“When we got on the base paths, we were aggressive,” Gaston coach Derrick Sewell said. “When we got on base, we continued to put the ball in play and forced them to make plays. They made a few errors and when they did, we capitalized off them.”
Jordan McCartney doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Bulldogs with his 1 for 3 day at the plate.
Gabe Crain, Destin Pollard and Dustin Gunter also went 1 for 3 for the Bulldogs.
Gaston travels to Ragland for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Thursday.
