After helping his team cap off a perfect regular season Friday, Piedmont’s Jamie Major got some individual accolades by capturing the win in The Gadsden Times’ player of the week online fan poll for Week 10 of the high school football season.

Major, a junior running back and safety for the Class 3A, top-ranked Bulldogs, had a big impact on the ground as Piedmont closed the regular season at 10-0 after a 42-22 win over Cherokee County. In the polling, Major took home 57 percent of the vote with 45,516 out of 79,895 votes cast.

Major had 109 yards rushing in the game on only six carries, with two of those touches going for scores. Major reached the end zone on runs of 28 and 58 yards.

Major was one of several Bulldogs to have a big game on the ground as Piedmont pounded out 503 rushing yards to just 16 for Cherokee County.

Another 3A team, Glencoe, saw its star running back — senior Austin Brown — finish second in this week’s fan vote with 33,048 votes (41 percent).

Splitting the rest of the remaining votes were Etowah quarterback Dalton Wadley, Boaz running back Tyler Martin and Southside kicker Connor Moran.

Brown had 10 carries for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets, who earned the right to host a first-round playoff game this week by defeating Douglas 28-7. The non-region victory helped settle a three-way tie in 3A, Region 6.

Wadley, a senior with a big arm, went 12 of 17 through the air for 160 yards and one touchdown. However, he did even more damage on the ground by rushing for three touchdowns as Etowah earned a 28-23 win over Pell City.

Martin, a senior for the Pirates and one of the top rushers in the area, put up another big game with a career-best 289 yards and two touchdowns as Boaz handed Sardis its first loss of the season, 14-7.

Moran, a senior, kicked a pair of field goals, including the game-winner late in the fourth quarter of Southside’s 13-11 victory over rival Hokes Bluff. It was the third time this season Moran kicked a game-winning field goal.
