GLENCOE — Class 3A, No. 10 Glencoe improved to 3-0 on the young season with a 7-6 win Friday night over Sand Rock, but Yellow Jackets’ coach Lee Ozmint was not impressed with his team’s execution.“Hats off to coach (Russell) Jacoway,” Ozmint said, referring to the Class 2A Wildcats’ coach. “He had his team ready to play and I didn’t. We played sloppy, we committed turnovers. We can’t do that in our region games. We will not win another football game if we play like that again.”Particularly at issue for the Glencoe coach were turnovers. The Yellow Jackets fumbled the ball five times in the game, losing three. They also threw an interception.
“We drove the ball down the field, but couldn’t finish drives,” Ozmint said. “And that’s my fault.”
In the first half, Glencoe drove as far as the Sand Rock 3-yard line on two occasions, but a missed field goal and a fumble resulted in no points, and the teams went to halftime scoreless.
Sand Rock struck first in the second half on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Mackey to Matt Graham midway through the third quarter. The extra point failed, and the Wildcats led 6-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, Aaron Benefield returned the ball to midfield to set up the Glencoe offense. After an 18-yard run by Chris Tinker and a 12-yard reception by Austin Hancock from Harrison Bright, Austin Brown capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. Joseph Bright’s PAT was good, and the Yellow Jackets had all the points they would need.
The Sand Rock offense never threatened to score again, and couldn’t get as far as midfield against the Yellow Jacket defense. For the game, Sand Rock managed just 34 rushing yards and 114 total yards. Mackey was 6 of 13 for 80 yards. Chad Thompson had 11 carries for 23 yards for the Wildcats.
Ozmint wasn’t even totally happy with the effort of his defense.
“The defense played well, but they still made mistakes,” Ozmint said. “We showed grit. I’m proud of that.”
Bright finished 9 of 17 for 117 yards for Glencoe. Austin Brown had 19 carries for 41 yards, and Daniel Otwell had eight rushes for 35 yards.
Glencoe will vist Weaver in a 3A, Region 6 game next week. Sand Rock will visit Westbrook Christian.
